From being a small cellular network in 1994, to serving more than 30 million customers, MTN has shown tremendous growth. In 2011, they were able to deliver 2G coverage to almost 100% of the population, and 3G coverage to 65% of the population. Today, their services are available throughout Africa and the Middle East.
To use their influence as a major network provider, they established the MTN SA Foundation in 2001. They contribute to the development of entrepreneurship, and also aim to provide better inclusive access to education, particularly in the area of special needs learning. Additionally, their sponsorship can be seen in various sports and recreational activities, such as the MTN Joyous Celebration event and The Springboks Rugby Team.
They acknowledge the country’s limited resources and want to reduce the environmental impact of their business. At their head office in Johannesburg, they use a 2MW tri-generation plant, powered with methane gas flowing through a pipe, all the way from Sasol Mozambique. This reduced their electricity usage by almost 40%. In remote areas, such as Vredesvallei in the Northern Cape, they have an off-grid base station providing up to 35km in coverage.
